Roosevelt Elk

MUM is excited to report that we had the opportunity to harvest two trophy Roosevelt elk bulls on the Stover Ranch this fall in northwest California. The Stover Ranch is a lovely, 7,000 acre ranch that is adjacent to the Redwoods National Park. These elk have been migrating off the Park for many years. These are believed to be the first free-range Roosevelt hunts to be offered through the state of California PLM program. Prior to these tags that were made available, the only way to get a Roosevelt elk tag in California was to be lucky enough to draw one of the very few state issued tags. As compared to our Roosevelt elk hunts on Santa Rosa Island, these bulls can qualify for the Boone and Crockett club. Bulls from Santa Rosa Island can be entered into the SCI record book, as can the bulls from the Stover Ranch.

Kevin Peterson and Mike Coehlo were the fortunate clients who got the chance to harvest bulls in September with Gordy as their guide. Both shot great bulls. Both grossed over the all-time B&C minimum, but neither netted above it. Kevin had a one shot kill on his bull at 40 yards with his bow. Very exciting!

We are hoping to gain additional tags in the coming years, but at present can only book two bulls for 2008 and beyond. Cross your fingers. There are hundreds of elk in this region of Humboldt County, and a adding a couple more tags would have no negative impact on these herds.
